Great use of budget! AMD FTW!! +1 for you sir! How well does the 860K perfom with the R9-280X? I'm looking into doing a full AMD, semi-small form factor build (in a Corsair Air 240) with the same CPU and MOBO as you but with a BEEFY graphics card (something like an R9-290X or R9-295X2); I just wanted to know if you're experiencing any extreme bottlenecks with the setup you have right now.

7th or 8th gen i5, 16gb ram, 256-512gb SSD, onboard video is fine, 1080p display. You will be absolutely blown away with how fast that will be compared to what you are using now and you should be able to buy something like that for $700-1000 even up here in Canada. No need to go over the top.

The Nighthawk has a really wide heatsink. Other than that, the XMP profile works just fine. The RGB effects works as well as any other, so for me, it's more an aesthetic and size compatibility question.
This was my first build with an AMD chip, and the A6-6400k was a pleasant surprise. My motherboard automatically overclocked it to 4.2 Ghz. It has handled 1080p video and blu-ray playback without any problems, and it doesn't feel slow.
